Students give cash prize to support group

Primary school pupils have donated prize money from an anti-violence talent competition to a support group for mothers bereaved by crime.

The four youngsters from West End Primary — Legend Stevenson, A’nyaz Wilkinson-Gibbons, D’Xy Roberts and Kenya Robinson — donated the $2,000 prize to Moms on a Mission.

The girls earned the prize for their second place in the Live. Love. Life. talent showcase last month at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts.

D’Xy told Wayne Caines, Minister of National Security: “We wanted to make the moms happy because they lost their sons.” Kenya added: “We have all we need.”

Trina Cariah, principal at West End Primary, said: “In these times, we want to teach our students that it’s important to give back, especially since we have students in our schools that have been impacted by the rampant violence on our island.

“We are happy by our decision and confident that the funds that were donated will greatly assist this organisation.”

Mr Caines said the four students represented “the Best of Bermuda”.

He added: “Their giving hearts are shining examples for all Bermudians.

“During this festive season it is heart-warming to see such a genuine expression of love and support.”
